Safety and Health Manager

Deseret Cattle Feeders (DCF) is a part of Deseret Ranches, a division of AgReserves, a management company that operates investment farms and ranches throughout the world. We are seeking an insightful and collaborative Safety and Health Manager to develop and administer safety procedures, programs, and practices for the assigned geographic stewardship and is an active participant of the local leadership teams.  The Safety and Health Manager advises on regulatory issues and together ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations with a focus on continuous improvement of safety practices.  A majority of work time is typically in the field observing and working with employees and their management. This full-time role will be based at the DCF farm offices in Satanta, KS.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage farm safety, environmental, and industrial hygiene exposures through proactive prevention activities.
    • Assist management as safety subject matter expert during planning, implementation, and execution of projects.
    • Monitor and report leading and lagging safety metrics to management. Enter data into systems.
    • Assist with workers’ compensation program and other duties with HR and Headquarters.
    • Provide direction and coordination with division personnel, headquarters, and government agencies for Safety and Health issues to both prevent incidents and injuries and ensure compliance.
    • Facilitate safety team activities such as audits, inspections, training, corrections, and elimination of hazards.
    • Ensure all machinery and equipment meet OSHA safety & health regulations and industry best practices.
    • Investigate incidents, make recommendations to eliminate reoccurrences, and help follow-up on corrective actions. 
    • Act as driving force to build, implement, monitor, and manage safety programs, policies, and procedures. 
    • Receive, review, and respond to daily and emergency needs of operational management, employees, visitors, and HQ.
    • Generate division safety awareness and safety culture change through education, dissemination of informational materials and programs, or other information sources for location employees.
    • Maintain documentation and records include safety training meetings, incident reports, chemical inventories, SDS documents, and safety committee meetings.
    • Oversee safety with contractors and loss prevention design with project engineers on all construction projects.  Liaise with property insurance company and project managers.
    • Oversee PPE hazard assessments for each job and assist in recommending proper personal protective equipment.
    • Oversee the maintenance and inspection of fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and AEDs.
    • Attend and ensure that safety committees are fully staffed, functioning, and being held monthly.
    • Plan, prepare, and update written Emergency Plans and SPCC Plans. Lead and coordinate appropriate emergency drills.
    • Help identify, create, coordinate, conduct, documenting, track, and train on Safety and Health programs (equipment, emergency, OSHA required, etc) to new hires, vendors, volunteers, post incident personnel, and other relevant persons.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in safety, health, industrial hygiene or equivalent professional experience. Advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years progressive experience in developing and managing safety and health programs. Expert in Incident investigation.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), and/or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) preferred.
  • Current or previous Forklift Train-the-Trainer, CPR and First Aid Trainer Certifications highly desired.
  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA and EPA standards.
  • Advanced computer and technical skills, including proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong demonstrated communication skills (writing, presentation, and data organization).  Bilingual in Spanish a plus.
  • Solid ability to train, influence, and motivate team members.
  • Must have valid driver’s license.
  • Travel up to 25%, domestic US.
  • Previous Agricultural or processing industry experience helpful.
